How We Started
Established in 2021, Willow Youth Projects grew from a need to invest in youth as celebrated members of community. By working closely with youth in underserved areas in Saint John, NB through the Teen Resource Centre, we gained a deeper understanding of youth experiences navigating systems and services for a variety of their needs. Through this work, we were able to witness the energy and passions that youth brought forward.
Initiated by funding from a youth advisory committee, Willow Youth Projects is a resource to help youth bring their ideas to life and showcase their perspectives as a meaningful component of community identity. Youth perspectives are powerful and we are thrilled to be creating avenues that recognize youth as valuable members of our communities.
What We Do
Willow Youth Project seeks to amplify youth voice through creative expression. We do this in two ways.
First, our projects guide youth through an exploration of the narratives and experiences that make us who we are and shape the roles we play within our communities. Although every project is different, they all start with a critical discussion about what is important to them, what they feel needs to be understood by others, and how they would like to bring those narratives to life.
Secondly, we partner with agencies in town to create platforms to showcase the projects that have been brought to life. These events bring our community together to support the important messages youth are putting forward through their creative expression.
This process of narrative exploration and showcasing creative expression bolsters connection and strengthens community belonging. It also sheds light on experiences that may otherwise not be understood, which in turn, advocates for the needs and goals of youth in our community.
Our approach
Our work is deeply rooted in participatory approaches in understanding community and all of it’s members.
We combine research, art, and advocacy to support youth in taking charge of their narratives and contributing to their communities.
